Children and Youth

At Saint George’s, our deep commitment to respecting and valuing all persons extends joyfully to the youngest members of our congregation. In partnership with the child, we help them find ways to know God, to ask questions, and to explore how they can live their faith in their lives.

We are striving to continue to build your child’s relationship to God during these uncertain times. Depending on your child’s age, we are looking to provide options for your child(ren) to deepen their sense of self and community with other Saint Georgians as well as a wider church community. Some children may fall into a couple categories and should feel free to join all options for their age if they are interested.

From acolyting and participation in Worship to our Sunday school offerings and Choirs for Children and Youth, we hope your family will find ways to connect with God, with one another, and with your neighbor.

We invite you to explore our offerings below and to be in touch with any questions you might have.

Catechesis of the Good shepherd

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Montessori-based faith formation program for children aged 18 months through third grade. Our trained Catechists partner with our children, allowing them to work with materials that enable them to explore their own faith and drawing upon the stories and traditions of the church.

Catechesis runs September through May and meets at 9:30am. Class ends with the children joining the rest of our worshipping community for Holy Eucharist (mid-way through our 10:30am service).

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is built upon the belief that God and the child have a unique relationship deserving of respect and proper nourishment.

4th-7th Grade Sunday Formation

On Sunday mornings at 9:30am, our 4th through 7th graders work alongside adult leadership to reflect on central themes of our Christian faith and life. Prayer, scripture study, conversation, and fellowship allow 4th-7th graders to grow in their faith and Christian friendships.

EPiscopal Youth in Community (eyc)

Saint George’s has an EYC (youth) group for middle and high school students, which meets periodically throughout the school year to share the goals of fun, fellowship, and service in Christian community.

In previous years, EYC participants have taken part in an annual lock-in and movie night, a tour of the National Cathedral complete with a picnic lunch in the Bishop's Garden, a trip to Flight! Trampoline Gym, various service opportunities, and cookouts.

sERVICE trip

All Saint George’s parishioners aged 14+ who have completed the 8th grade (as of time of scheduled trip) are invited to take part in a Service Trip planned for Summer 2023. We will volunteer for one week with the Appalachia Service Project, whose mission is to make homes warmer, safer, and drier. Planning for our trip is already underway, and the planning is often just as impactful as the trip itself. Working alongside adult leadership and chaperones, youth will take part in fundraising, educational opportunities, and other planning which will bring them closer to one another and to the greater Saint George’s community.

cHOIRS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH

Saint George's offers a variety of choirs for children ages 3 through grade 12. We welcome anyone to be a part of our fun, fellowship, and music-making.

SEA SCOUTS

Saint George’s sponsors a Sea Scout troop and thus has it own “navy.” The troop is for girls and boys ages 14-20 to learn sailing and water and boating safety. Find out more about Saint George's own Ship 1942 on their website.
