Juneteenth

Dear Friends,

Today is Juneteenth, the day we celebrate the ending of slavery in the United States.  It marks the day that slaves in Galveston Texas were finally made aware of the Emancipation Proclamation that President Lincoln had issued two and a half years earlier.

Tonight at 7:00 everyone is invited to a Juneteenth observance at Saint George’s.  We will gather on Zoom to hear the stories of fellow Saint Georgians who will share their experiences of interactions with police.  Please see below for details and the Zoom link.  I hope you can be a part of this conversation as we listen to our friends with our hearts, minds and souls.  This is one of many events planned by our race and reconciliation committee in the months ahead as we affirm that Black Lives Matter and strive to honor the dignity of every human being.

This is such a momentous time in our nation’s history and it is important that we take a stand as Christians for the life of the world, “loving our neighbor as ourselves.” This past Wednesday our vestry voted unanimously to place a Black Lives Matter banner near our front door so that we can bear witness to our faith and support the Spirit’s work of bringing forth a new heaven and a new earth.

I look forward to coming together on holy ground tonight during our Juneteenth Zoom Conference and I look forward to coming together in our on-line worship service on Sunday.

I leave you with the words of the prophet Micah which are at the bottom of our Black Lives Matter banner.

Do Justice,

Love Kindness,

Walk humbly with your God.

Micah 6:8

Yours in the power of the Spirit,

Shearon+
